The Gabriel Ezenri Foundation exists because I know what it costs to pursue knowledge in Nigeria — and what it costs when that pursuit gets cut short.
I trained as a pharmacist at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and it was there that I fell in love with research — with the idea that a good question, asked carefully and answered honestly, could change how people are treated and cared for. It was also there that I watched brilliant classmates thin out. Some couldn't make a tuition deadline. Others quietly shrank their final-year projects because the data, the reagents, or the surveys cost more than they had. A few of the sharpest minds I knew simply stopped — not for lack of ability, but for lack of a little money at exactly the wrong moment.
That experience never left me. Years later, as I pursued research and graduate study of my own, I met the same barrier from the other side — the test fees, the application costs, the publication charges that stand quietly between a talented Nigerian and the wider academic world. Everywhere I looked, I found the same story wearing different faces: extraordinary ability, ordinary money problems.
So this foundation is my answer. We fund students so they can finish. We fund researchers so they can discover. And we stay with our scholars beyond the cheque — with mentorship, community, and a genuine stake in what they go on to do.
We are starting deliberately, with a first cohort we can support properly, and we will grow as our resources grow. But our measure of success is already fixed: careers launched, research published, problems solved, and a generation of Nigerian scholars who never had to choose between their potential and their pocket.
